A manuscript recording a speech that he made in Sondrio in 1874 is interesting, since it proposes a theory of continental drift forty years before Alfred Wegener formally proposed his theory.
He has left a ‘‘St. Benedict’’ in the church of the convent at Sondrio, and a ‘‘Descent of the Holy Spirit’‘ in the church at Morbegno.
Giulio Tremonti, twice Italian Finance Minister, was granted honorary citizenship on 29 December 2009; though born in Sondrio, his father was a native from Lorenzago.
The section from Tirano to Sondrio had a different origin, being opened in 1902 as a private railway by the Società Anonima per le Ferrovie dell'Alta Valtellina (FAV).
