The bodies of many residents and political victims from Taiwan's martial law period are buried in hillside cemeteries that now overlook the Taipei 101 shopping district.

The highway begins at the MacArthur Bridges in the east(connecting the Neihu district, and Keelung Road (in the Xinyi and Songshan districts), heads west to an interchange with the Zhongxiao Bridge and the Huanan Expressway, providing direct access to Taipei Main Station, which is just south of the Civic Blvd.

In general, however, the Eastern District refers to the area between Civic Boulevard and XinYi Road, including most part of Daan District, Xinyi District and Songshan District, the administrative districts in eastern Taipei.
The southern half became Xinyi District while the northern half retained Songshan District as its name.
