The highway begins at the MacArthur Bridges in the east(connecting the Neihu district, and Keelung Road (in the Xinyi and Songshan districts), heads west to an interchange with the Zhongxiao Bridge and the Huanan Expressway, providing direct access to Taipei Main Station, which is just south of the Civic Blvd.

Taipei's commercial center has since shifted south east to Zhongzheng, Daan and Xinyi, and Datong is far less important economically.
Renai Road forms a one-way couplet with Xinyi Road between Guangfu Road and Zhongshan Road, with Renai for westbound traffic and Xinyi for eastbound traffic.
Buses to Xinyi District are also plentiful from all parts of Taipei, with a major bus terminal at Taipei City Hall Bus Station.

The southern half became Xinyi District while the northern half retained Songshan District as its name.

The Xinyi District (meaning "honesty") is the seat of the Taipei mayor's office and the Taipei City Government.
Xinyi Road is known for the location of the original Din Tai Fung restaurant, which is famous for its Taiwanese dumplings, and as the location of the Taipei 101 skyscraper.
Including a 62.5 km spur from Haian to Nantong, the Xinchang Railway is 638 km in total length.
