Educated at Royal College, Colombo, Jayawardane joined the army in 1980, undergoing basic training at the Sri Lanka Military Academy.
Mallawaarachchi enlisted into the Sri Lankan Army in 1971, upon his completion of his Officer Cadet training at the Sri Lanka Military Academy, Diyatalawa.
As an officer instructor at the Sri Lanka Military Academy (SLMA) in Diyatalawa, he trained the first foreign cadets to attend SLMA and went on to become its commanding officer.

During his military service he had served as commanding officer of the 7th Field Engineer Regiment SLE, Chief Instructor at the Sri Lanka Military Academy as well as serving as a staff officer at the former Joint Operational Command, Volunteer Force Headquarters and as Brigadier, general staff at Security Forces Headquarters – Wanni during the height of the Sri Lankan civil war.
