The building was initially built in 1865 as a Baptist chapel, to a design by William Wigginton, but was consecrated for the Church of England in 1870.

There are four primary schools in Openshaw, St Clement's C of E Primary School on Abbey Hey Lane, Varna Street Primary School, Higher Openshaw Community School (formerly Clayton Brook Primary School) off High Leigh Road and St Barnabas C of E on Parkhouse Street.
In 1883, Basil became organist of St. Barnabas Church, Pimlico completing his Sonata in C# Minor here in 1885, selling the copyright to the publisher Schott for one shilling a year or two later.
His remains are interred in St. Barnabas Church, Pimlico and marked by a plaque inset in floor of the chancel, close to where he would have stood to conduct the choir.

It operates from three campuses; the Junior School is adjacent to Belair National Park and the Belair railway station, the Early Learning Centre is opposite the Junior School, and the Secondary School, set up in 1998, occupies the site of the former Retreat House and St Barnabas Theological College.
Highlights include the roof beam, the tryptich above the high altar, the Lady Chapel, the shrines of Our Lady and of St. Barnabas, the baptistry, the Nativity painting by Norbert Chapdelaine, the Stations of the Cross, the 1897 Casavant Frères organ, and the stained glass windows.
