The name Leonardslee derives from the lea or valley of St Leonard's Forest, one of the ancient forests of the High Weald.
The forest was larger than the modern parish, effectively the part of the Rape of Bramber in the High Weald including Rusper, Ifield, the eastern part of modern Horsham and Nuthurst.

The Church of England parish church of St Leonard dates from 1170: 12th century work includes the nave, pillars, tub font and sanctus bellcote: 13th century south aisle; 14th century windows; 15th century tower, stained glass and tiny chantry chapel: open bell-chamber and ring of six bells.
The name of the village derives from a chapel at Mumby dedicated to St Leonard; the village history is tied to that of Mumby, both at one time being part of the same ecclesiastical parish.
