The opera house itself, formerly known locally as the Grosses Haus, was designed by Max Littmann and opened in 1912.

During the era of Opera Intendant Klaus Zehelein, the company has won the Opera House of the Year award by the German magazine Opernwelt more often than any other company: in 1994 (the inaugural award), 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002 and in 2006.
Both Windgassen's parents were longtime mainstays of the Staatsoper Stuttgart.

She has appeared at a variety of Euopean opera houses including the Opernhaus Dortmund, the Staatsoper Stuttgart, and Opera North in England.
After several seasons at Stuttgart (1975–1979) she sang Sieglinde in Patrice Chéreau's production of the The Ring Cycle (1979) at the Bayreuth Festival, where she also sang Isolde (1986).
