The Cheshire Agricultural Society met for the first time in 1838, with Stapleton Cotton, 1st Viscount Combermere as the first president.

His son Stapleton Cotton, 1st Viscount Combermere had hoped to preserve Lleweni, but taxes later forced the sale of the estate to William Lewis Hughes, Baron Dinorben in order to pay off the debts of his father.
