He joined the Singapore Legal Service in 1970 and was appointed State Counsel at the Attorney-General's Chambers.
Mr. Nyagah Gacivih and Ms Dorcas Oduor both state counsel in the office of the Attorney General initially served counsel assisting.
Prior to his political career, he was active in the judiciary, first serving as a Justice's Law Clerk to then Chief Justice Yong Pung How, then as Deputy Public Prosecutor, followed by State Counsel, Magistrate, and finally Assistant Registrar at the High Court of Singapore.
After obtaining an LL.B degree in Law, he was called to Nigerian Bar in 1987, starting work as a Pupil State Counsel for the Federal Ministry of Justice, Lagos.
