Inspired by the Neoplatonic academies of 16th and 17th-century Italy, which combined discourse with musical presentations, the Music of the Spheres Society was founded in 2001 by its artistic director and violinist, Stephanie Chase, and hornist Ann Ellsworth.
Chase plays on a violin made in 1742 by Pietro Guarneri, the ex-Paschell, which she pairs with a bow made by Dominique Peccatte.

Stephanie Chase is married to the musical instrument expert Stewart Pollens and is an aunt to the actors Becki Newton and Matt Newton.
