5 unusual facts about Steve Spurrier

South Carolina Gamecocks

The "Halloween Game" against the University of Tennessee has the potential to be a big football game every year, and a rivalry has been brewing with the University of Florida since the Gamecocks hired Steve Spurrier, Florida's former head football coach.

Steve Spurrier is the current head coach, and the team plays its home games at Williams-Brice Stadium, the 20th largest stadium in college football.

Steve Spurrier

He played professional football for ten seasons during the 1960s and 1970s with the San Francisco 49ers and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the National Football League (NFL).

Spurrier's offensive line troubles resulted in starting quarterback Patrick Ramsey being one of the most sacked and hurried quarterbacks in the league.

WLTY

After seven years of mediocre ratings against the dominant adult contemporary station, WTCB, the station flipped on August 16, 2005 to variety hits as "Steve FM" (rumored to be named for then-new University Of South Carolina football coach Steve Spurrier, even though he is affiliated with WISW.).

Bruce Elia

Tampa then traded Elia, wide receiver Willie McGee and a second-round draft pick to the San Francisco 49ers for quarterback Steve Spurrier.

Jon Tenuta

Other speculation at the time was that Tenuta may join Steve Spurrier at South Carolina, to replace former defensive coordinator Tyrone Nix (who left for Ole Miss), but South Carolina decided to hire former University of Georgia defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder for the job, VanGorder left that position without coaching a game to become the Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator.

Marty Schottenheimer

Despite this momentum, in a controversial move, Daniel Snyder, the owner of the Redskins, fired Schottenheimer on January 13, 2002 after just one 8–8 season to make room for former University of Florida head coach Steve Spurrier.

Michigan Panthers

The Panthers would bounce back with a 42-7 thrashing of the stellar Tampa Bay Bandits, coached by future Florida Gators head coach, Steve Spurrier.
