A visit to Japan on the way back from the Test series in Australia in 1895 inspired him to apply knowledge that he acquired there to estate of Stobo Castle, near Peebles, in the Scottish Borders.

He was also involved with work on many country houses in Scotland, including Blair Castle and Taymouth Castle in Perthshire, Loudoun Castle in Ayrshire, and Stobo Castle in Peeblesshire.
In 1767, he bought for £40,000 Stanhope and Stobo in Peeblesshire, part of the estates of Sir David Murray, which had been confiscated for their owner's complicity in the rebellion of 1745.
