She lives in New Jersey with her husband, Larry Dark, formerly the Series Editor for Prize Stories: The O. Henry Awards and currently Director of The Story Prize, an annual book award for short story collections.
The book won the 2012 Story Prize and received a 2013 American Academy of Arts and Letters Rosenthal Foundation Award.
Named a Best Book of the Year by The Independent of London and The Irish Times, the collection has received the Southern Reviews Annual Short Fiction Award, the Glasgow Prize for Emerging Writers, the Texas Institute of Letters' Debut Fiction Award, the Christopher Isherwood Prize, the James Michener Fellowship, and was shortlisted for Ireland's Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award, "the richest short story prize in the world."
She has been awarded several literary prizes for her works, including an award from the Society of Spanish and Iberoamerican Writers in 1961, the Ricardo Miró National Prize for an essay or novel in 1966, the Central American Novel Prize in 1976, a prize from the magazine Lotería in 1971 and 1984, and the National Story Prize from the city of Bogotá, Colombia, in 1996.
