Fossil remains of dwarf elephants have been found on the Mediterranean islands of Cyprus, Malta (at Ghar Dalam), Crete (in Nomos Chanion at Vamos, Stylos and in a now under water cave on the coast), Sicily, Sardinia, the Cyclades Islands and the Dodecanese Islands.
Since the first non-direct (source?) translation of Abranchak-Lysynecki (Lviv, 1915), few partial translations were published (Yarema Polotniuk - Vsesvit Journal, 1990), Valeriy Rybalkin ("Stylos", 2002) and Mykhaylo Yakubovych.
The species is described from limited remains found in Stylos and in Vamos cave, Chania, west Crete.
Stylos or Stilos (Greek: Στύλος) is a village, part of the Armenoi municipal unit in the Chania regional unit of the Greek island of Crete located where natural springs rise at the foot of the White Mountains on the fertile and tree covered Stylos Valley.

The land to the north between Stylos and Megala Chorafia is believed to be an important Minoan site, possibly associated with Aptera, or maybe ancient Aptera itself.
