unusual facts about Sunspot

John Wainwright Evans

As director of the observatory Evans chose the name Sunspot, New Mexico, for the post office and community where the observatory was located.

Annie Scott Dill Maunder

The investigations of the Maunders demonstrated a correlation between the variation in sunspot numbers and the climate of the Earth, leading to the discovery that the period of decreased solar activity during the Maunder Minimum likely resulted in the Little Ice Age.

Benedict Sestini

At Georgetown Observatory, in 1850, Sestini made a series of sunspot drawings, which were engraved and published (44 plates) as "Appendix A" of the Naval Observatory volume for 1847, printed in 1853.

Edward Walter Maunder

Edward Walter Maunder (12 April 1851 – 21 March 1928) was an English astronomer best remembered for his study of sunspots and the solar magnetic cycle that led to his identification of the period from 1645 to 1715 that is now known as the Maunder Minimum.

National Solar Observatory

The observatory lies in New Mexico at the southern end of NM Scenic Byway 6563, about 18 miles (by car) south of Cloudcroft (on NM 82), and 40 miles southeast (by car) from Alamogordo (on NM 70 and 54), in the village of Sunspot inside of the Lincoln National Forest.

Rudolf Wolf

Wolf was greatly impressed by the discovery of the sunspot cycle by Heinrich Schwabe and he not only carried out his own observations, but he collected all the available data on sunspot activity back as far as 1610 and calculated a period for the cycle of 11.1 years.

Sunspot Records

Sunspot 5: 1.6 Band 7" ep "Your Restaurant" (1000 pressed) subsequently re-pressed on Gern Blandsten Records
