The word supersession is used by Sydney Thelwall in the title of chapter three of his 1870 translation of Tertullian's Adversus Iudaeos (written between 198 and 208).
From 1867 to 1874 he was curate of Charles Church, Plymouth, Devon He was vicar of West Leigh, Devon from 1874 to 1892, and vicar of Radford Semele from 1892 to 1909.
