Tumor depth is one of the cornerstones of the current AJCC TNM staging of malignant melanoma.
In the TNM (Tumor, Node, Metastasis) system, clinical stage and pathologic stage are denoted by a small "c" or "p" before the stage (e.g., cT3N1M0 or pT2N0).
In the TNM classification, carcinoma in situ is reported as TisN0M0 (Stage 0).
TNM is developed and maintained by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) to achieve consensus on one globally recognised standard for classifying the extent of spread of cancer.
