The main sanctioning body for the Midwestern United States changed several times throughout his career; he raced in Championship Off-Road Racing (CORR), World Series of Off-Road Racing (WSORR) and Traxxas TORC Series (TORC).
His secular works include two operas for young people, The Torc of Gold (1996) and The Quest (2000), both on libretti by playwright Maeve Ingoldsby, commissioned by the National Chamber Choir and premiered in Dublin under his direction.
Brother of NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson and a former NASCAR competitios, he currently competes in off-road racing, driving in the TORC: The Off Road Championship series.
They also appear in Simon R. Green's Secret History series of books The Man with the Golden Torc (2007), Daemons Are Forever (2008), and The Spy Who Haunted Me (2009).
He is said to have been the first king in Ireland whose followers wore golden torcs around their necks (his name may derive from Old Irish muin, neck).
The torc was then acquired for the British Museum through the Duchy of Lancaster and with the assistance of the Christy Trust, and the finder, landowner A. E. Middleton was awarded the full market value of £3,300.
