He has also been co-appointed as the Special Research Consultant of the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), as a Visiting Professor of Keio University, University of Tokyo, and Tokyo Institute of Technology and as a Visiting Research Director of RIKEN.

In 1999, under the new joint editorship of Martin Kreitman (the current editor-in-chief), Takashi Gojobori, and Giorgio Bernardi, the journal made explicit its focus on "the fundamental issues in molecular evolution", to the exclusion of molecular phylogenetics (the purview of several other molecular evolution journals, most significantly Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution) and origin of life research, except in cases that have "a special significance and impact".
He also trained many graduate students and postdoctorals who later became leading figures in molecular evolutionary biology including Margaret Kidwell, Wen-Hsiung Li, Ranajit Chakraborty, Shozo Yokoyama, Aravinda Chakravarti, Dan Graur, Fumio Tajima, Naruya Saitou, Chung-I Wu, Naoyuki Takahata, Takashi Gojobori, Pekka Pamilo, Austin Hughes, Andrey Rzhetsky, Jianzhi (George) Zhang, and Sudhir Kumar.
