With the collaboration of the associates, the institute went on to develop a publishing company (Taos Institute Publications), a distance learning program (in conjunction with the Houston Galveston Institute), and a PhD program (in collaboration with Tilburg University in the Netherlands).

In 1991 Whitney along with Kenneth Gergen, Mary Gergen, Sheila McNamme, Harlene Anderson, David Cooperrider and Suresh Srivastva founded the Taos Institute as a community of scholars and practitioners dedicated to furthering relational practices in the fields of organization development, family therapy and education.
He is currently a Senior Research Professor at Swarthmore, the Chairman of the Board of the Taos Institute, and an adjunct professor at Tilburg University.
