Kia kaha

Numerous schools use Kia kaha as, or as part of, their mottoes, including Te Aute College, Hawke's Bay (Whakatangata kia kaha); Tikipunga High School, Whangarei (Kia kaha, kia maia, kia manawanui); Golden Bay High School, Takaka (Ake ake kia kaha); Rotorua Intermediate School, Rotorua (Kia kaha, kia maia); and Rosehill Intermediate School, Papakura (Whaia kia kaha) and Te Awamutu Te Awamutu College and Kingwood Park High school (Kia Kaha).

Te Aute College

Jamie Dixon, currently men's basketball head coach at the University of Pittsburgh, coached the school's basketball team in 1989—his first coaching job at any level.

Traditionally a single sex male boarding school, female students from its sister school Hukarere were enrolled at the school in 1992, and in 1993, when Hukarere went into recess.

Young Māori Party

It grew out of the Te Aute Students Association, established by former students of Te Aute College in 1897.


Apirana Ngata

Several schools have houses named after him, including Rangiora High School, Tauranga Boys' College, Rotorua Intermediate, Cashmere High School, Te Aute College (where Ngata went), and Te Puke High School.

Robert J. Pope

He began his teaching at Te Aute College, Hawke’s Bay, and then became a master at the first school in Levin.
