The Chinatown part of the street links the junction of Telok Ayer Street and Amoy Street towards Cecil Street, and for the Shenton Way part linking from Shenton Way to Cecil Street.
An 1856 painting by Percy Carpenter, entitled Telok Ayer Street as seen from Mount Wallich, features an early visual record of the brick mosque.
In early 1913, Reverend F.H. Sullivan borrowed money and bought a piece of land at the junction of Telok Ayer Street and Cecil Street for $3,600.
