Colton Common became officially part of Colton when the Ingram family who resided in Temple Newsam, bought the whole Austhorpe Lodge estate, selling it off and keeping Colton Common as their own.
The house known as Sheriff Hutton Park, south-east of the village, was built in 1621 for Sir Arthur Ingram, whose main seat was Temple Newsam; it was recased in more up-to-date style in 1732 for a member of the Thompson family.
Newland was only one of two preceptories in West Yorkshire, the other being that of the Knights Templar at Temple Newsam, and the only one established by the Knights Hospitaller.
It is held in the grounds of the Jacobean mansion Temple Newsam, and is followed the next day by Party in the Park, a pop concert, thus making double use of the work and expense involved in setting up the venue.
Due to their great success in Leeds, the Yorkshire Evening post coupled with Radio Aire invited them to share the bill at Party in the Park at Temple Newsam with artists such as Dizzee Rascal, Calvin Harris, N-Dubz and the Noisettes.
