On Balchen's death the house passed to his son-in-law Commodore Temple West (later vice-admiral), who had married Balchen's daughter Frances.
Cobham had excluded from succession Temple West and Gilbert West, his nephews who were sons of Richard West and his elder sister Maria; and also his other sister Penelope.
The marriage produced six children, two of whom survived into adulthood; Frances, who later married Temple West (Vice Admiral Temple West) and George, who followed his father into the Navy.
