Hodge cultivated his writing skills for extended music scoring and film music while understudying with Grammy-nominated composer Terence Blanchard, where he also received on the job training while working as an instrumentalist on many of Blanchard’s films including She Hate Me, Waist Deep, and Inside Man.
He has worked on albums and musical projects with a wide variety of artists such as Herbie Hancock, Terence Blanchard, Rod Stewart, The Black Keys, Beyoncé Knowles, Wiz Khalifa, and Paul Oakenfold.
In 1999, Goldman was selected by jazz legends Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter to be a member of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz where he toured the world and performed with a who’s who list of jazz icons (Herbie Hancock, Terence Blanchard, Christian McBride, Clark Terry, Jimmy Heath, Roy Haynes, Kenny Barron, Wayne Shorter, Bobby Watson, to name a few).
Many acclaimed musicians have performed at Jazz Kitchen, including Larry Coryell, Lavay Smith, Pharez Whitted, Jon Faddis, Kathy Kosins, Yellowjackets, Frank Glover, Joey DeFrancesco, Terence Blanchard, J. J. Johnson, Simone (actress), Preservation Hall Jazz Band and Ray Brown (musician).
Kendrick was a member of the band that accompanied Terence Blanchard to the Monterey Jazz Festival’s 50th anniversary in 2007, and Scott will embark on the 22-state tour, starting in January, 2008 with the 50th Anniversary MJF All-Star Band features the leaders of the past, present and future with Terence Blanchard on trumpet, James Moody on saxophone, Benny Green on piano, Derrick Hodge on bass, and jazz vocalist Nnenna Freelon.
His former students lead their own groups and have played with bands led by a wide range of jazz legends, such as Roy Haynes, Kenny Garrett, Elvin Jones, Pat Metheny, Cecil Taylor, Wynton Marsalis, Richard Bona, Joshua Redman, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Charlie Haden, Terence Blanchard, Charlie Hunter, Anthony Braxton, Jimmy Smith, Eliane Elias, and Lonnie Plaxico.
