California alternative hip hop group The Pharcyde's debut album Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde featured as its first single "Ya Mama" mainly of the group playing the dozens, released October 8, 1992.
Fans would sing the latter part of The Pharcyde's "Otha Fish" (in which rapper Fatlip seems to mention Kabba several times) as a tribute to the player.
It follows the life of hip hop producer J-Swift, formerly of The Pharcyde, from homelessness and crack addiction to his mission to win back his life and music career.
In the period between his album releases, Diamond spent time producing a number of artists, including Brand Nubian, Cypress Hill, Fat Joe, The Fugees, House of Pain, KRS-One, Lord Finesse, Tha Alkaholiks, The Pharcyde, Illegal, and Xzibit.
With Reggie Andrews’ record collection at their disposal, J-Swift and The Pharcyde crafted a three-song demo in ’91 and subsequently a hip-hop classic, 1992’s Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde.
Disputes over production and credits caused a rift between J and the group (although they would later reunite on The Pharcyde’s “Trust” remix in 2000, not to mention several J-Swift-produced tracks on Fatlip’s 2005 solo debut The Loneliest Punk, and Fatlip and Tre Hardson’s 2007 holiday song “All I Want for Xmas”).
