As the extent of the workings increased, a Dutch company cut canals in the peat, and used barges towed by horses to remove it.

A small area of Crowle Moor was managed for conservation by the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust from 1971, and the Nature Conservancy Council bought another small area in 1985.
