In 1997, he cofounded the cooperative improvising trio Paraphrase with saxophonist/composer Tim Berne and drummer Tom Rainey.
In this 10 years JMT released the debuts of Steve Coleman, Greg Osby, Cassandra Wilson, Jean-Paul Bourelly, Robin Eubanks and Gary Thomas defining M-Base as their common ground, alongside recordings of musicians associated with the New York downtown scene as Mark Feldman, Mark Dresser and Hank Roberts (as Arcado String Trio) or the latter with Tim Berne and Joey Baron together as Miniature and with other bands.
Argüelles has worked with musicians drawn from around the world including Archie Shepp, Tim Berne, Hermeto Pascoal, Steve Swallow, John Abercrombie, Dave Holland, Peter Erskine, Chris McGregor, Evan Parker, Mike Gibbs, John Scofield, Carla Bley, Dudu Pukwana, Arturo Sandoval, and Giorgio Gaslini.
He has performed and recorded with many international recording artists such as John Tchicai, Miroslav Vitous, Ellery Eskelin, Tim Berne, Palle Danielsson, Marc Ducret, Anders Jormin, Michael Formanek, Tomasz Stanko, Carsten Dahl, Jesper Zeuthen, Ray Anderson, Alex Riel, Mikko Innanen and Lotte Anker are among others.
It features two (or four) compositions by Tim Berne performed by the Tim Berne Sextet which consisted of Clarence Herb Robertson, Ray Anderson, Mack Goldsbury, Ed Schuller, Paul Motian and Tim Berne.
Many notable jazz musicians have played at the Vortex, including Last Amendment, F-IRE Collective, Derek Bailey, Kenny Wheeler, Evan Parker, John Etheridge, Tim Berne, Ian Shaw, Lianne Carroll and Django Bates.
