Quark was founded under the name "Quark Engineering" 1981 by Tim Gill and Mark Pope.
McFarlane served as the executive director of the Gill Foundation from 2004 until 2008, an LGBT organization founded by Tim Gill and based in Denver that which provides grants and operating support for not-for-profit and community foundations.
As of April 2010, the mansion sold to Denver philanthropist Tim Gill and his husband, Scott Miller.
Gill's involvement in LGBT political action began in 1992, in response to the passage of Colorado Amendment 2, which prevented non-discrimination ordinances in the state from protecting people based on sexual orientation.
