4 unusual facts about Tokaj


Bodrog

It crosses the Slovak–Hungarian border at the village of Felsőberecki (near Sátoraljaújhely) in Hungary, and Streda nad Bodrogom in Slovakia, where it is also the lowest point in Slovakia (94.3 m AMSL), and continues its flow through the Hungarian county Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén, until it meets the river Tisza in Tokaj.

Flor

A similar yeast to flor is used in the production of Szamorodni szaraz in the Tokaj wine region in northeastern Hungary.

Grasă de Cotnari

The grape variety Grasa is similar to Kövérszőlő, a grape cultivar grown in Tokaj, Hungary and both of them can be found in some areas in Alba county, supporting the thesis that they share common roots.

Tokaj

Tokai, a region of Cape Town, is named after the nearby mountains' resemblance to the hills of Tokaj-Hegyalja.
