The range of B. ambusticauda is listed as including the lower and middle Mekong and Chao Phraya River drainages in mainland Southeast Asia; the original distribution of this species included the Chao Phraya River drainage from Bangkok upriver to the lower Nan River and in the Mekong from Vietnam and the Great Lake (Tonle Sap) to the lower Nam Ngum River.

Geography of Vietnam

At Phnom Penh it merges with the Tonlé Sap and divides into two branches - the Sông Hậu Giang (Hậu Giang river) (known as the Bassac River on the Cambodian side) and the Sông Tiền Giang (Tiền Giang river) - and continues through Cambodia and the Mekong basin before draining into the South China Sea through nine mouths known as the Cửu Long (nine dragons).

The Tonle Sap-Mekong peat swamp forests and Tonle Sap freshwater swamp forests lie to the southeast, in the seasonally and permanently flooded lowlands along the Tonle Sap and Mekong rivers and Tonle Sap Lake.

Wildlife of Cambodia

Cambodia supports more than 8000 identified plant species, many of which are endemic to unique local ecosystems, such as the Tonlé Sap floodplain, forests of the Cardamom and Dâmrei Mountains, and higher elevations.

Blue botias are widespread throughout Indochina, appearing in the Mekong River basin and rivers connected to it such as the Chao Phraya River basin and Bangpakong river of Thailand and the Tonlé Sap lake of Cambodia.

The ship resumed its trip passed the province of Zhenpu (Baria in present day South Vietnam), through Poulo Condor Sea, then heading north on the Mekong River into Tonle Sap River reaching the town of Kampong Chhnang of Cambodia; from there he boarded a small boat, sailing for a dozen days, through Tonle Sap Lake arriving at Angkor Thom, the capital of Cambodia in August.
