The cipher system that Uesugi used is basically a simple substitution usually known as a Polybius square or “checkerboard.”

The Kamiizumi clan served loyally under the local family of Uesugi throughout the course of the 16th century.
Nagao Kagetora, adopted by Uesugi Norimasa, became lord of the castle in 1548, taking the name Uesugi Kenshin and effectively changing the ruling clan of Kasugayama from Nagao to Uesugi.
