After this Fleischhauer retired from public life and lived quietly until his death on 20 October 1960 in Giengen.

His career was at first grounded in the Imperial German Army where by 1918 Fleischhauer rose to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel and regimental commander of a field artillery unit in Colmar.
