Umfraville

Dickie Umfraville was a much-married character in Anthony Powell's novel series A Dance to the Music of Time.

He was governor of Forfar and was given the right of appointing the wardens of the marches.

Umfraville is the name of an English baronial family, derived from Amfreville in Normandy.


Gilbert de Umfraville

Gilbert was the eldest son of Richard de Umfraville, Lord of Redesdale.

South Kyme

This was a mediaeval castle which is believed to have been built between 1339 and 1381 by Gilbert de Umfraville third Earl of Angus and Lord of Kyme.

William the Hardy, Lord of Douglas

Douglas' father William Longleg was Lord of Fawdon, and had as his superior Gilbert de Umfraville, Earl of Angus, Longleg was acquitted of withholding rents by a jury, Umfraville notwithstanding attacked Fawdon, imprisoned Longleg at Harbottle Castle and made off with some £100 sterling of goods.
