Umuahia

On June 28, 1968 Umuahia was captured by Nigerian troops during Operation OAU but was re-captured by Biafran troops on July 23 that same year.


Capture of Owerri

In July 1968 the Nigerian General and commander of the 3rd Marine Division Benjamin Adekunle began making plans for an invasion of Aba, Owerri, and Umuahia in a military operation he nicknamed Operation OAU, Adekunle boldly stated that he would be able to capture all three cities in 2 weeks.

Only two days before Owerri's capture the Biafran capital, Umuahia, fell to Gen. Mohammed Shuwa's 1st Division and the capital was moved to Aba.

Elechi Amadi

Born in 1934, in Aluu in the Ikwerre local government area of Rivers State, Nigeria, Elechi Amadi attended Government College, Umuahia (1948-1952), Survey School, Oyo (1953-1954), and the University of Ibadan (1955-1959), where he obtained a degree in Physics and Mathematics.

Government College Umuahia

These three institutions, Government College Umuahia (GCU), Government College, Ibadan and Government College Zaria (Barewa College), were designed to follow the traditions of British "public schools" such as Eton, Harrow and Winchester.

The Government College Umuahia also had an Officer Cadet Corps that offered instruction camps in field drills, and adventure training.

In 1927 the British Colonial Government in Lagos decided to start 3 new Secondary Schools for boys, namely a school in Ibadan (Government College, Ibadan), in Zaria (now Barewa College) and in Umuahia (Government College Umuahia).

Theodore Orji

Theodore Ahamefule Orji was born in Amaokwe Ugba, Umuahia – Ibeku in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State in 1950.
