Blackford Hill is formed from Lower Devonian volcanic rocks, lying between Upper Devonian sandstone, the northernmost extent of those found in the Pentland Hills to the South.
The bedrock in the valleys of the park consists of the Upper Devonian Catskill Formation, consisting of sequences of sandstone, siltstone, and shale.
The only other fully described valid species is Drepanopterus abonensis, from the Upper Devonian of Portishead, Somerset.
Kettle Point is the site of a rare outcrop of an Upper Devonian shale called the Kettle Point Formation.
