According to Thucydides, in the History of the Peloponnesian War, the Argeads were originally Temenids from Argos, who descended from the highlands to Lower Macedonia, expelled the Pierians from Pieria and acquired in Paionia a narrow strip along the river Axios extending to Pella and the sea.
The municipality is the place of the confluence of the Treska and Vardar rivers.
The superhighways Greek National Road 1 in Greece and M1 and E75 run within the valley along the river's entire length to near Skopje.
The mountain marks the watershed of the drainage basins of the Ibar within the Danube drainage basin, the White Drin, and the Vardar.

They won the Macedonian Republic League on four occasions and along with Vardar, was the only other Macedonian club to have won the Federal EasternYugoslav Second League containing only the teams from 3 federal Republics:Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia Kosovo and Voivodinship.
