2 unusual facts about Varina Davis

Varina Davis

A portrait of Mrs. Davis, titled the Widow of the Confederacy (1895), was painted by the Swiss-born American artist Adolfo Müller-Ury (1862–1947).

He was also gone for extended periods during the Mexican War, when Varina was left under the guardianship of Joseph Davis, whom she had come to dislike intensely.

Burton Harrison

At the end of the American Civil War he was captured by the Union Army with Jefferson Davis, and Varina Davis, and imprisoned at Fort Delaware, where he resumed his long-interrupted law studies.

Elizabeth Van Lew

It has been widely suggested that Van Lew convinced Varina Davis to hire Bowser as a household servant, enabling Bowser to spy in the White House of the Confederacy.
