Vehicle registration plates of Ghana

The numbering starts from 1 to 9999; in the Ashanti and Greater Accra Regions, many vehicles are registered every year therefore, supplementary plates are provided for these two regions - AW and AE are the supplementary plates for the original AS of the Ashanti Region; GT, GN, GW, GE, GY, GL GS, GC, GM and GX are also the supplementary plates for the original GR of the Greater Accra Region.

There are ten Regions in Ghana: Ashanti, Brong-Ahafo, Central, Eastern, Greater Accra, Northern, Upper East, Upper West, Volta and Western.

On the vehicle registration plates, one will see the first letter from the name of the region and the letter 'R' which denotes Region; however, four of Ghana's ten Regions: Ashanti, Brong-Ahafo, Upper East and Upper West do not take the format whereby the letter 'R' and the first letter from the name of the Region are used - AS, BA, UE and UW are used for Ashanti, Brong-Ahafo, Upper East and the Upper West Regions respectively.
