6 unusual facts about Veneti

According to the theory, the Slovenes were not descended from the Slavs that settled the region in the 6th century, but that they were descended from a proto-Slavic speaking people known as the Veneti.

Raeti

It has also been suggested that the name Raeti may be connected with Reitia, a major goddess who was revered in northeast Italy and is attested in a number of inscriptions on votive tablets of the Veneti people.

Alternatively their language may have been Italic, akin to that of their close neighbours, the Veneti (whose language, considered part of the "West Italic" sub-branch of the Italic branch of Indo-European, was closely related to Latin).

Venetic language

Its speakers are identified with the ancient people called Veneti by the Romans and Enetoi by the Greeks.
