4 unusual facts about Victoria Day

Bonnechere River

Originally arranged by local Shriners the run has taken on a less official status, occurring with little to no organization apart from its pre-determined date during Victoria Day weekend.

Conmee, Ontario

Although the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere officially occurs around the 21st of June, Conmee's festival would take place over the "Victoria Day" long weekend, at a location colloquially known as "Mokomon's Farm", where people would set up tents in the fields and meadows, local folk and rock music bands would provide entertainment, and local crafts persons would display their art.

Victoria Day

In Quebec, the same day was, since the Quiet Revolution, unofficially known as Fête de Dollard until 2003, when provincial legislation officially named the same date as Victoria Day the National Patriots' Day.

This replaced the Fête de Dollard, which had been celebrated by Quebecers on Victoria Day since the 1960s and which commemorated Adam Dollard des Ormeaux.

Hillcrest Mall

In 2013, an application was made to Richmond Hill Town Council to exempt the mall from the Retail Business Holidays Act so that it may open on six public holidays: New Year's Day, Family Day, Good Friday, Victoria Day, Canada Day, Labour Day, and Thanksgiving.

Riverside South, Ottawa

Those three weeks will then be re-distributed throughout the school year giving the students and teachers a one-week Thanksgiving vacation, an additional week during the week of the Victoria Day holiday, and an additional week during March break.

Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway

On Sundays during summer months (Victoria Day to Labour Day), the Parkway's westbound lanes are closed to motor vehicles and opened to pedestrian and bicycle traffic from 9 am until 1 pm.
