Vilna Gaon, born Elijah ben Shlomo Zalman Kremer, but known almost exclusively as the Gaon of Vilnus.
Jacob was the son-in-law of Rabbi Issachar of Vilna, brother of the Vilna Gaon.
He also wrote on mathematics, being well versed in the works of Euclid and encouraging his pupil Rabbi Baruch of Shklov to translate the great mathematician's works into Hebrew.

His father was a bibliographer, and his grandfather Phinehas was rabbi at Polotsk and Vilna, the emissary of Elijah of Vilna in his struggle with the Hasidim, and the author of nine exegetical works.
Kol HaTor - קול התור or "The Voice of the Turtledove" (a reference to Song of Songs 2:12) was written by Rabbi Hillel Rivlin of Shklov a disciple of the Vilna Gaon .
