1982 to 1986 were the band's most active years in Milwaukee, which found them headlining clubs and opening concerts for the Violent Femmes, The Replacements, The Damned, and the Butthole Surfers.
The first track with English-language lyrics played was Blister in the Sun by the Violent Femmes, chosen by public vote.
Featuring many of their well-known songs, including "Blister in the Sun", "Kiss Off", "Add It Up" and "Gone Daddy Gone", Violent Femmes became the band's biggest-selling album and was eventually certified platinum by the RIAA.

However, on June 17, 2008 the band released a cover of "Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley who had previously covered "Gone Daddy Gone".

Guy Hoffman, formerly of the Oil Tasters and BoDeans, was brought in to tour what was to become one of their biggest-selling records, the Add It Up (1981–1993) collection.

2005 saw the release of two collections of past work—a CD called Permanent Record: The Very Best of Violent Femmes on Slash/Rhino and a DVD, Permanent Record – Live & Otherwise from Rhino, which showcases a concert performance from 1991, along with many of the group's videos.

In the mid 90s Rocha played guitar with San Francisco bands El Destroyo featuring Brian Ritchie of Violent Femmes and the Mockingbirds featurng Les James (drums), Paul Babiak (bass) and Mark Fuqua (vocals).
After this meeting, Brian Ritchie (bassist for the Violent Femmes) decided to produce their next album, and joined as a fourth member.
Throughout his time as an author and editor, Herber played bass guitar for blues and rock bands across the United States, including Detroit's Progressive Blues Band, Dr. John, Bonnie Raitt, Mitch Ryder, The Thunderbirds and opening for The Temptations, John Mayall, The Violent Femmes, and others.
