After the East German Volkspolizei took control of West-Staaken on 1 February 1951 the checkpoint was moved up more eastwards.
The Volkspolizei and the Soviet Army suppressed the uprising, in which approximately 100 participants were killed.
Members of the Combat Groups of the Working Class and police controlled every person who tried to enter the houses and the residents were subject to rigid controls, even in the hallways.
In June and July 1953, a strike by construction workers in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) led to an uprising of the people of the communist state which was violently put down by Soviet forces and the Volkspolizei.
He was constantly under surveillance by the Volkspolizei and they uncovered a plan for his escape (aided by discus colleagues Ricky Bruch and Alwin Wagner).
