The people were usual for all the Siberia colonization: fugitive peasants who escaped from excessive pressure of Peter the Great's regime, Old Believers (raskolniki), people free for various reasons (volnitsa) like hunters for furs attracted by the richness of Siberian woods and others, searching for freedom (volya) and wishing to settle in these places (see History of Siberia).
In April 2010, computers were seized from Kalinkina and fellow Narodnaya Volya reporter Marina Koktysh, as well as Charter 97 editor Natalya Radina and Novaya Gazeta journalist Irina Khalip as part of an investigation into a slander case filed by Ivan Korzh.
Bogdanovich supported the latter position and when Land and Liberty broke in two, he joined the resulting splinter organization, the People's Will (Narodnaya Volya).
