Test status was granted to the WACA for the 1970–71 Ashes series and although its playing conditions were equal to any in Australia $400,000 was raised to build extra stands and improve the facilities.
The finals series was played in Brisbane even though it was Perth Heats home series, their home ground the WACA was being used for an interstate Sheffield Shield Cricket match.
He made 131 in the Second Test at Perth in its inaugural Test match, and so became the first batsman to make a Test century at the WACA.
He was a wicket-keeper and a useful lower-middle order batsman, who made 133 for England against Australia at the WACA, Perth in 1987.
Hussey debuted for the Australian One-day team against India on 1 February 2004 at his home WACA ground in Perth.
On 14 May 2007, the WACA announced Penney's appointment as assistant coach of the Western Warriors under Tom Moody for the next three years.
