The finals series was played in Brisbane even though it was Perth Heats home series, their home ground the WACA was being used for an interstate Sheffield Shield Cricket match.
On 19 March 1932 he made his first-class cricket debut in a match for Western Australia against the touring South African national cricket team at the WACA Ground.
He made 131 in the Second Test at Perth in its inaugural Test match, and so became the first batsman to make a Test century at the WACA.

Test status was granted to the WACA for the 1970–71 Ashes series and although its playing conditions were equal to any in Australia $400,000 was raised to build extra stands and improve the facilities.
Their plans are interrupted briefly by an injury crisis for the touring English cricket side (described as a "complete spare parts side") which sees Tony Greig and Mark Nicholas, as well as Graham Gooch being recruited into the team for a test being held at the WACA Ground, without much success.
