Following redistricting as a result of the 2000 Census, this district, based in southeastern Georgia, maintained its strongly conservative bent, pulling from the conservative suburbs of Savannah, the social conservatives along the coastline, and stretching into the highly conservative Warner Robins, where an air force base is located.
Griffin served honorably as a clerk typist in the United States Air Force from 1972–1976, and was stationed at Warner Robins Air Force Base in Georgia and Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska.
In 1990, the station changed its UHF frequency from channel 15 to channel 29, so as to avoid interference to a Department of Defense early warning ballistic missile detection facility located at the Warner Robins Air Force Base.
