Alaska gubernatorial election, 2006

Incumbent Frank Murkowski (R), first elected governor in 2002, ran for reelection but was defeated in a landslide in the Republican primary by former Wasilla mayor Sarah Palin on August 22, 2006.

Marmot Day

Senate Bill 58, sponsored by Sen. Linda Menard, R-Wasilla, was first introduced by the late Dr. Curtis Menard, Linda Menard's husband and former state legislator.


Anti-moose mat

In October 2005, the municipal airport in Wasilla, Alaska, a town about 40 miles (65km) north of Anchorage, installed mats around the airfield to prevent moose from walking onto the runway and colliding with aircraft.

According to David Talbot, founder of Salon, Lake Lucille was listed as "impaired" in 1994 by the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation and in 2008 still carried the same descriptive label after twelve years of "Wasilla's frenzied development" under Mayor Sarah Palin (Oct 1996 - Oct 2002) and her successor as mayor, Dianne Keller (Oct 2002 - Oct 2008).

Loren Leman

Verne E. Rupright

Early during his term, Rupright set out a plan to make Wasilla a "fishing mecca" by rehabilitating Lake Lucille and stocking the lake with larger fish.
