The original breeds used in the breeding of the Blue Albion are thought to have been Shorthorn, Welsh Black and British Friesian cattle.
Many inmates work on the prison's farm, which has 120 dairy cattle plus young stock, along with a small herd of pedigree Welsh Black cattle.
The result was the formation in 1799 of the Banc yr Eidon in Llandovery, the Bank of the Black Ox, which was later purchased by Lloyds Bank.
